1-800-AMBULANCE was used by a nationwide air ambulance company starting in 1984--primarily with direct mailings and yellow page advertising, in the pursuit of air ambulance clients. However, the owners soon learned that, along with air ambulance inquiries, they were swamped with calls for ground ambulances--even though 1-800-AMBULANCE was clearly advertised for air ambulance service. The number began to stick with John Q. Public, Case Managers, Social Workers, and Doctors Offices... The owners stopped advertising 1-800-AMBULANCE simply because it was clogging the phone lines with unwanted ground ambulance calls... It became obvious that the natural place for 1-800-AMBULANCE was with the ground ambulance industry...

1-800-AMBULANCE currently receives roughly 300 calls per month in areas that have no advertising at all. Many of these calls are "assumptive"-- individuals who simply dialed 1-800-AMBULANCE expecting their call to connect them to a large, legitimate ambulance service. These calls provide evidence that the average person in the United States has no ideawho or where to call when in need for non-emergency ambulance service -- a market that is largely untapped...

We see three goals for 1-800-AMBULANCE.

1. Give the public easy access to non-emergency ambulance service, nationwide.

2. Help relieve the pressure from 911 centers by giving this outlet to the public.

3. Build a network of accredited, licensed, and professional ambulance companies that all meet the standards of service that the public can expect from 1-800-AMBULANCE. This ensures that all 1-800-AMBULANCE members are working to build a quality image for each other, and we deliver the quality the public comes to expect...
